The current courthouse was built in 1871 after Effingham was named the county seat. An earlier 1850's courthouse had been on the site.

The courthouse retains a pristine exterior and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Also on the grounds of the courthouse are veterans memorials, sculpture and a monument to Lord Thomas Howard, Earl of Effingham.
